Our Priory History

The Priory of St. Matthew History

In the vast expanse of Texas, stretching over 268,820 square miles, burns the unwavering commitment of the Priory of St. Matthew. Named after the author of the first book in the New Testament, St. Matthew the Priory embodies the rich Christian heritage of the Lone Star State.

Authorized by the international Ordos Supremus Militaris Templi (OSMTH), it found a permanent home within the Grand Priory of the United States of America (GPUSA) in 2002. This was largely thanks to the tireless efforts of Prior the Hon. Chev. Edward F. Butler, Sr., Esq., GOTJ.

Judge Butler, a man of dedication, not only recruited members and officers to sustain the Priory’s mission, but also actively fostered ties with other chivalric orders. His commitment extended well beyond the Priory, including his service as President General of the Sons of the American Revolution.

The Priory’s strength lies in its diversity. Knights and Dames hail from every corner of Texas, from the sun-kissed shores of the Gulf of Mexico to the rugged plains of the West. From the piney woods of the East to the majestic mountains bordering New Mexico, and the central Texan Hill Country, all regions and all walks of life are represented. Our postulants, individuals seeking membership, are formally invested during the biannual Convent and Investiture ceremonies, hosted in turn by our three preceptories.

The Priory has seen its share of exemplary leaders. Captain Chev. John M. Lindell, GCTJ, GMTJ, refined the investiture protocols and nurtured strong relationships with the GPUSA leadership. Chev. Patrick Carney, GOTJ, focused on membership growth, ensuring proper procedures were in place, and acquiring the necessary regalia for the investiture ceremonies.

Prior Carney’s vision also extended beyond the Priory. During his tenure, he not only strengthened ties with the Grand Priory by serving as their Grand Treasurer, but also established three preceptories within Texas – St. Mark in Austin, St. Luke in Houston, and St. John the Evangelist in Dallas. Under his leadership, the Priory witnessed its largest gathering ever, with a record number of knights, dames, and visitors attending the Convent and Investiture ceremony.

The legacy of leadership continued with Prior BG Chev. Robert J. Bodisch, Sr., GOTJ, and Prior Robert W. Cooper, GOTJ. Between them they significantly expanded charitable efforts, increased the frequency of their Medal of Courage Program, and championed the ideals of chivalry. The latest leaders: Prior Dennis L. Williams, GOTJ, Prior Charles A. Wall, Jr. GCTJ, and Prior Ryan Hall, GOTJ,  who in turn dealt successfully with the impact of COVID and its aftermath, and now Prior Michael W. Brazell, GOTJ, continue this tradition, ensuring the Priory of St. Matthew remains a beacon of charity and service in Texas.

The Priory’s purpose is clear: to promote living a God-centered, chivalrous life, promote love and respect within our communities, foster interfaith understanding, and aid those in need. From supporting pilgrims visiting holy sites to protecting the defenseless, we strive to uphold the noble ideals of the Knights Templar.
